MET Matrix

The MET Matrix is a tool used in analysing and evaluating several environmental impacts of a particular product over its life cycle assessment. The acronym MET stands for Materials, Energy, and Toxicity. The instrument adopts a 3x3 matrix with descriptive phrases or statement contained in various cells.

One particular element of the MET matrix is designed with a qualitative input-output framework that studies environmental issues related to the product’s materials, energy, and toxicity usage.

The other element assesses the product’s life cycle by means of its fabrication, usage, and discarding stages. The descriptive text in each cell matches the intersection of two different aspects. For example, by analysing a particular cell, a person will be able to evaluate the different aspects such as energy usage in comparison with the production stage. Additionally, by evaluating the three cells, he or she will easily assess toxicity level that may affect the result appearing in the disposal stage.

The primary descriptive cells of the MET matrix include a material’s production and supply, distribution, use (which is always classified into operation and service), and end-of-life system. MET’s logical method is used for the arrangement and classification of important environmental information, which is linked to the product. Thus, it will be easy to identify the strengths and flaws of a product.
